Hardware Barcode Scanner, Mobile Touch Sign-Off & Operator Speed Guide

Learn how to connect plug-and-play USB or Bluetooth 1D/2D barcode scanners to Keystone X for rapid warehouse GRN intake, serial number registration, stocktake counting, and invoice line entry—plus how field technicians capture legal HTML5 touch signatures on smartphones and tablets.

1. Connecting USB & Bluetooth 1D/2D Barcode Scanners (Zero Drivers Required)

Keystone X supports any standard **1D Laser Barcode Scanner** (`CODE128`, `EAN-13`, `UPC-A`, `CODE39`) or **2D QR / DataMatrix Imager** (such as Zebra, Honeywell, Datalogic, or Netum) connected via USB receiver or Bluetooth **HID Keyboard Wedge Mode**.

Scanner Configuration Setting Recommended Value Why It Matters in Keystone X
Interface Mode USB HID Keyboard or Bluetooth HID Streams scanned barcode characters directly into the active Keystone X search or serial input box at 100+ characters per second with zero proprietary driver installation.
Terminator Suffix CR (Carriage Return / Enter) or Tab When scanning multiple **Serial Numbers** during a GRN intake (`PurchaseOrder/receive/{id}`) or inside the **360° Serial Command Center** (`inventory/trackSerial`), a `CR / Enter` suffix automatically advances to the next line or triggers an instant lookup!
Default ERP Symbology CODE128 (Alphanumeric) or EAN-13 Configured globally under admin/settings#inventory-governance (`inv_barcode_symbology`) and inventory/settings. `CODE128` supports both letters and numbers (e.g., `SKU-01042` or `SN-2026-99812`).
Where You Can Use a Barcode Scanner Across Keystone X
  • Warehouse GRN Stock Receiving (`PurchaseOrder/receive/{id}`): Click into the Serial Numbers box on a serialized PO line and scan each box's manufacturer serial barcode one after another—each scan places a serial number on its own line automatically.
  • 360° Serial Number & Warranty Lookup (`inventory/trackSerial`): Click into the Serial Search bar and scan any returned unit's barcode to pull up its full supplier GRN origin, customer invoice date, warranty countdown, and RMA history in under a second.
  • Catalog Search & Stocktake (`inventory/index`): Scan a product's EAN/UPC/SKU barcode into the search box to filter straight to that SKU and log a Stocktake Adjustment or Inter-Warehouse Transfer.
  • Quotes, Invoices & Job Cards (`quote/add`, `invoice/add`, `jobcard/edit`): Type or scan the SKU code into the Item selector to auto-populate the item's description, selling price, unit of measure, and SARS VAT code.

2. Field Technician Mobile Workspace & Touch Signature Capture

Field technicians logging into Keystone X from an Android phone, iPhone, or iPad are automatically routed to the distraction-free **Field Technician Workspace** (`home/index` when `view_reports` is disabled on their role):

  1. 1-Tap GPS Address & Site Contact: Open any assigned Job Card (`jobcard/view/{id}`) to view the customer's site address, primary contact telephone link, and reported fault description.
  2. Log Parts Used & Labour Hours On-Site: Record spares consumed from the technician's van warehouse and log exact billable hours while standing at the client's premises.
  3. HTML5 Touch Canvas Customer Sign-Off (`jobcard/saveSignature/{id}`): Hand the phone or tablet to the customer to sign directly on the screen with their finger or stylus, enter the Signatory Name, and tap **Save Signature & Complete**.
  4. Instant Signed Job Card PDF & Invoice Conversion: Keystone X embeds the cryptographic PNG signature onto the official Job Card PDF, emails a signed receipt copy to the client, and alerts the office billing team that the job is ready for 1-click conversion into a Tax Invoice!

3. Power-User Speed Habits & Daily Operational Shortcuts
