Volume 9 · Article #27 Executive BI & Financial Statements SARS VAT201 & Accountant Year-End Pack

Enterprise Financial & Business Intelligence Reports Suite (Income Statement P&L, SARS VAT201 Return, Aged Debtors, Stock Valuation, Accountant Audit Pack & Studio)

Turn your operational data into board-ready financial statements and statutory filings: understand Gross Profit vs. Net Operating Profit, generate your Income Statement (P&L), reconcile your SARS VAT201 Return worksheet, audit Aged Trade Receivables and Multi-Warehouse Stock Valuation, download your 1-Click Accountant's Year-End Audit Pack PDF & CSV schedules, and customize your Reporting Governance Studio.

1. Plain-English Financial Statements 101: Revenue, COGS, Gross Margin & Net Profit

When you open the **Income Statement (Profit & Loss)** or the **Accountant's Year-End Pack**, Keystone X structures your performance into a four-tier waterfall. Here is what each tier means in plain English:

1. Revenue (Sales Excl. VAT) [GL 4000] — Invoiced goods & services (excluding 15% SARS Output VAT, which belongs to SARS, not you) R 1,000,000.00
2. Less: Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) [GL 5000] — Direct landed/FIFO purchase cost of the inventory items sold (R 600,000.00)
= GROSS PROFIT (Gross Margin % = Gross Profit ÷ Revenue = 40.0%) R 400,000.00
3. Less: Operating Expenses (OPEX) [GL 6000–6999] — Rent, Salaries, Fuel, Software, Bank Charges (Excl. claimable Input VAT) (R 220,000.00)
= 4. NET OPERATING PROFIT BEFORE TAX (Net Margin % = 18.0%) R 180,000.00
Why VAT Never Appears on Your Profit & Loss Statement: If you are VAT-registered, the 15% Output VAT you charge customers is a tax liability (`GL 2200`), and the 15% Input VAT you pay suppliers is a tax asset (`GL 2210`). Neither is your income or expense—they are netted off in your **SARS VAT201 Return** (`report/sarsVat201`).

2. The 6-Mode Executive BI Command Center (`report/index`) & Smart Date Presets

Navigate to Reports & BI → Executive Reports Hub (`report/index`). At the top of every report is the **Universal Fiscal Period Filter Bar** supporting both custom `start_date` / `end_date` pickers and 6 instant presets: This Month, Last Month, This Quarter, Current Tax Year (automatically aligned to your fiscal start month, e.g., `01 Mar – 28 Feb`), Year-to-Date (YTD), and Rolling 12 Months.
